An Internationar Seminar "Politics in the Global Age - Critical Reflections on Sovereignty, Territory, Citizenship, and Nationalism" will be held in HSB 132 (China Centre), IIT Madras between December 12-14, 2011. India-EU Study Centres Programme held its Final Conference on 22nd November 2011 at Hotel Taj Mahal, Mansingh Road, New Delhi. The day long event brought together the stake holders, consortium partners, study centre representatives, Vice-Chancellor of the Universities, academia together to share their experience about their centres in partcular and the programme as a whole.
The Conference was inauguarated by H.E Prof. Piotr Kłodkowski, Ambassador of the Republic of Poland and the Key Note address was delivered by Ms Vibha Puri Das, Secretary, MHRD, Government of India. The other dignitaries who were at the Conference were Ms. Veena Ish, Joint secretary MHRD, Dr. Dev Swarup, Joint Secretary UGC and Mr. Fernando Nino Page. Head of Economic Cooperation from EU Delegation to India. Heads of Study centres both from India and Europe, University management and acdemia attended in large numbers during the Conference.
A Documentary Film – “Gateway for New Possibilities” was also screened during the Conference.







International Seminar on "EUROPEAN IDENTITY AFTER LISBON TREATY"




Prof. S.K. Sopory, Vice-Chancellor, Jawaharlal Nehru University inaguarted the seminar. H. E. Prof. Piotr Klodkowski, Ambassador, Embassy of the Republic of Poland, Current EU Presidency delivered his inaguaral speech. H. E. Ms. Daniele Smadja, Ambassador, Head of Delegation of the European to India delivered the key note address during the occassion. Academic community, students from JNU and diplomatic officails attended the seminar in large number.

Workshop on Sustainability of IESCP Web Portal at Manipal University, 27/08/2011 and IIT Madras, 29/08/2011
India EU Study Centres Programme organized two one day workshops at the Manipal University on the 27th August 2011 and for the faculty and students of Department of Humanities and Social Sciences, IIT Madras on the 29th of August 2011.


Internationalization of Higher Education: Understanding and Responding to Bologna Process
A two-day International Conference was organized by Manipal Centre for European Studies, under the aegis of India EU Study Centres Program (IESCP) at Manipal University on August 25-26, 2011 at Manipal.The is an initiative of IESCP and Manipal University to better acquaint Indian academia with the working and implications of the Bologna Process, keeping in view the increasing collaboration of Indian universities with European universities over the last few years. The workshop was primarily aimed at representatives of European Studies Centres in India and Heads of various Institutions of Manipal University, and representatives from various universities in India which are spreading their wings to different parts of the world, specifically Europe.




The Conference attempted to put into perspective the different ramifications of the Bologna Process both in European and non-European settings by situating the Process in its historical context and studying its development since 1999. Furthermore, the conference discussed how Indian universities can collaborate better in view of the changing scenario of European higher education. With experts from Europe as well as from within India speaking out on different aspects of the internationalization of higher education, many more intricacies was uncovered.

Prof. Dr. Balveer Arora conferred with French Award "National Order of the Legion of Honour"
Prof. Dr. Balveer Arora, Chairman, Centre for Multilevel Federalism, Institute of Social Sciences. and Former Professor of Political Science & Rector, Jawaharlal Nehru University New Delhi was conferred with the coveted French Award of " Chevalier dans lOrdre la Legion dHonneur".
The Insignia of the award was prsented to him by his Excellency Jerome Bonnafont, The Ambassador of France at a special ceremony held at the Embassy of France, New Delhi on the 14th July 2011, coinciding with the French day celebrations.
Dr. Balveer Arora is a staunch supporter of the India-EU Study Centres Programme and is contributing to its cause from the inception. His contribution to the development of European studies in India was mentioned in the citation.

Information Seminars on Research & Innovation Colloboration between India and EU
Over a two-week period, 13-24 June 2011, the European and its Member States have organised together 27 information seminars throughout India to raise awareness among Indian research stakeholders - including SMEs - about the opportunities that they can offer for research and innovation cooperation with India.
23 European S&T Counsellors and representatives of research organisations from Belgium, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Poland, Spain, the United Kingdom, as well as from the Delegation of the European , made more than 100 presentations in 27 key research and innovation hot spots in India.
On this occasion, a compendium including all European mobility schemes for Indian researchers and students interested to go to Europe was made available to all participants. Participants also received a USB memory stick containing the mobility schemes, all presentations as well as a lot of information of the cooperation between Europe (Member States and EU) and India. In many cities, the information event were followed by a buffet lunch to allow for informal networking with the speakers and participants.

Aarhus University (CISCA) and IIT Madras (CCEUS) have announced the winners of the "Essay Competition" organised jointly by them under India-EU Stidy Cetres Programmes on the 18th May 2011. The two winners were selected out of the 19 eligible entries received from the students of 'Contemporary India Study centres' in Europe and "European Study Centres" in India. The topic for the essay competition was " Europe and India - the reciprocal way".

The Workshop held at Indian Institute of Technology Madras Campus, Chennai from the 6th -11th June 2011, was conducted jointly with faculty participation from University of Sussex, Brighton and School of Interdisciplinary Area Studies, University of Oxford.

India and EU had policy dialogue on Higher Education on the 25th and 26th May 2011 at senior level officers meeting held in Brussels at the EU Head Quarters. The Indian delegation was headed by Ms. Vibha Puri Das, Secereary - Higher Education, Government of India and consisted of Prof. Ved Prakash, Chairman - University Grants Commision; Prof. SS Mantha, Chairman - All India Council for Technical Education; Mr. Amit Khare, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Human Resource Development and Prof. Panchanan Mohanty - University of Hyderabad. EU was represented by Mr. Jan Pakulski, Director General (EAC), Mr Joachim Fronia, EACEA and hosts of other EU senior officials.




Subsequently, the Indian Government delegation visited the "Contemporary India Study Centre" at Warsaw University, Poland on the 27th May 2011 and interacted with the students and faculty of the Study Centre, which is one of the European Centre established under the EU funded, India-EU Study Centres Programme. Vice-Rector Prof. Wlodzimierz Lengauer, from Warsaw University was the host of the meeting. Secretary Ms. Vibha Puri Das presented a set of literature on 'Contemporary India' to the Study Centre representative.


Mr. Hans Schoof, Head of Operations from EU Delagation to India, Mr. Ulrich Podewils, Team Leader (IESCP) and representatives of some of the IESCP Study Centres participated in the Policy Dialogue meeting at Brussels.
Workshop on Emerging Areas in Ecological Research and Sustainability
Manipal Centre for European Studies (MCES), Manipal University organized a One-day Workshop on Emerging Areas in Ecological Research and Sustainability on May 16, 2011. Mr Suresh Prabhu, Former Cabinet Minister for Energy, Environment and Forests was the Chief Guest and delivered the key-note address. The occasion, also presented posters of the five projects going on under MMDRC (Manipal Multidisciplinary Developmental Research Centre) of MCES.






India in International Relations: European and Indian perspectives
Centre for European Studies (School of International Studies), Jawaharlal Nehru University and Centre for Contemporary India Research and Studies, Institute of International Relations, University of Warsaw under the aegis of India-EU Study Centres Programme, conducted an international conference on the 27-28 April 2011 at the "School of Arts and Aesthetics Auditorium, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi".




The Conference was inagurated by H.E. Daniele Smadja, Ambassador of EU to India and the key Note address was delivered by Professor Piotr Klodkowski, Ambassador of Poland to India. The conference was presided by Professor B.B. Bhattacharya, Professor of Economics, former Vice-Chancellor of Jawaharlal Nehru University.
India and the European : Partners in the 21st Century
Centre for European Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University in association with Centre for Contemporary India Research and Studies, Institute of International Relations, University of Warsaw under the aegis of India-EU Study Centre Programme on the 29 April 2011 conducted an Interenational Conference on the above subject at the Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi (School of Arts and Aesthetics Auditorium).
Europe Day Celebrations at IIT Madras

Comparative European Studies, Department of Humanities and Social Sciences, Indian Institute of Technology Madras, Chennai celebrated the Europe day on April 21, 2011 at IC & SR Auditorium, IIT Madras.
Pierre Fournier, Consul-General of France, French Consulate, Pondicherry and Chennai, M.S. Ananth, Director, IIT- Madras and Jamie Cribb, Deputy Head, British Deputy High Commission, Chennai participated at the celebrations. “Working together for peace, the European can build a partnership with India by supporting its sustainable growth and giving the relationship an impetus, a vision and coherence”, said Pierre Fournier. Jamie Cribb, talked about the initiatives in higher education between India and UK. Prof. M.S. Ananth, Director, IIT-Madras, presided.
Workshop for European Study Centres in India
India-EU Study Centres Programme in colloboration with the Centre for European Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University conducted a one day workshop for the new and existing European Study Centres in India on the 18th April 2011 at the School of International Studies, JNU campus, New Delhi. The Workshop primarily discussed the funding oppurtunities and Sustainablity of the Study Centres.

First German ECSA Young Researcher Conference on the theme "Europe's Post-Crisis Stability – An Interdisciplinary Approach" was held on February 21-23, 2011 at European Academy Berlin, Germany. The Conference was organised by German ECSA Arbeitskreis Europäische Integration (AEI) · ZEW Mannheim and Supported by: Stiftung Geld und Währung · European Commission.
Workshop on Area Study Centres
India-EU Study Centres Programme, with the Academic Support of University Grants Commission organised a Workshop on "Area Study Centres" on the 17th and 18th January 2011 at ‘Vivanta’ by Taj Ambassador Hotel, New Delhi. The participants were from IESCP Centres; Indian Area Study Centres; Representatives of European Cultural Centres and Agencies.









The Workshop was inagurated by Mr. Fernando Nino Page, Head, Economics Section of the EU delegation to India in the presense of Dr. Dev Swarup, Joint Secretary, UGC and Mr. Ulrich Podewils, Team Leader IESCP. Dr. Balveer Arora, former Rector JNU delivered his Key Note Address. The Workshop was attended by representatives of Study Centres nof IESCP, Area Study Centres in India and Europe. Also present and addressed the gathering were vice-Chancellors and eminent professors of several prestigious universities in India and abroad.
