Editorial
The India-EU Study Centres Programme is part of the EU-India Joint Action Plan, that implements the EU-India Strategic Partnership. EU Study Centres in India and Contemporary India Study Centres in Europe aim to become active and innovative, unique and irreplaceable engines for the development of Indo - European co-operation.
Six institutions of higher education, three from India and three from EU Member States were selected to create new Study Centres after a strong competition. In addition, nine universities, six from India and three from Europe will receive technical assistance in order to strengthen their already existing Study Centres.
Her Excellency, Ms. Daniele Smadja, Ambassador and Head of the Delegation of the European to India recently referred the Study Centres as ‘New Born Babies’ – that have to be nurtured to grow and walk. They have to walk as individuals but, in order to become stronger, they have to learn walking together; only if they go hand in hand, they will become more efficient and successful.
The Web-portal of the India-EU Study Centres Programme will help to exchange, disseminate and share information about the Programme, the selected Centres, joint activities and news in higher education in general. This Newsletter gives its readers the chance to get regular updates on events and progress of the Study-Centres Programme and its partners.
I would like to encourage you, as a potential reader to subscribe to the E-Newsletter which will be regularly published in our web portal. It is my strong belief that the portal with its dynamics and wider outreach will continue to foster the India-EU relationship beyond the scope and tenure of the Programme.

- Upgrading selected existing European Study Centres in India and Contemporary India Study Centres in EU through academic, administrative and institutional capacity building.
- Supporting establishment of four new EU Study Centres in India and two Indian Contemporary India Study Centres in Europe.
- Promoting a better knowledge about the EU in India and about India in Europe through events, information support, dissemination activities, creation of new and wider networks of EU and Contemporary India Study Centres.
Programme Steering Committee
The Programme Steering Committee (PSC) is guiding the project implementation and monitoring the progress of the activities. The

- European Delegation in India (EUD)
are part of the Programme Steering Committee.
The Committee meets every six months. Based on the periodical reports of the Technical Assistance Team, the PSC will be in charge of identifying the necessary adjustments during the project implementation, will ensure the exchange of information and updates on India-EU Study component developments and provide liaison among the stakeholders.
The First meeting of the Programme Steering Committee took place on the 17th November 2009.

It has the unique distinction of being the only grant-giving agency in the country which has been vested with two responsibilities: that of providing funds and that of coordination, determination and maintenance of standards in institutions of higher education.

Ongoing series of Erasmus Mundus Information Sessions
On Wednesday, September 23, Mrs. Smadja, Ambassador, Delegation of the EU to India, launched at the Guru Gobind Singh University, a series of information sessions on the Erasmus Mundus Programme. The Erasmus Mundus road-show will continue at various Universities in Delhi, in order to inform the highest number possible of students and scholars on the opportunities offered by this EU flagship programme. The first opening event was kindly hosted and co-organized by the Guru Gobind Singh University, which also hosts the Erasmus Mundus Alumni Association. Both Mrs. Smadja and Vice-chancellor Dr. Dilip K. Bandyopadhyay agreed on and re-stated the importance of intercultural academic exchanges between Europe and India and of the modernization agenda of Higher education institutions.
The EM information sessions continued in Jamia Millia Islamia University, New Delhi on the 7th October 2009 and at University of Delhi on the 26th October 2009. Information sessions will continue in other universities in India in the year 2010.

Erasmus Mundus Programme has launched Call for Proposals for 2010

Joint Orientation Workshop
Joint workshop of IESCP for the existing and New Study Centres
India-EU Study Centres Programme organized its first combined workshop for the existing Study Centres [selected to receive Technical Assistance] and the new Study Centres [selected by the Delegation of the European to India for receipt of grants] on the 20th and 21st January 2009 at the IIT Madras campus, in continuation of the Inauguration of the EU Study Centre of IIT Madras.
Representatives of the Study Centres made presentation about their respective centres and developed a Mission and Vision Statement for the Programme.
The Technical Assistance team explained about the Programme, services to be offered by them, Visibility and Communication Strategy and the use of web portal by the Study Centres. The Study Centres have found the workshop extremely useful. Please look for more updates and proceedings on the workshop from the Web site.
Inauguration of Study Centres
Inaguration of EU Study Centre at SP Jain Institute of Management and Research, Mumbai
Reutlingen University, ESB Business School in partnership with SP Jain Institute of Management & Research, Mumbai, India and in association with Knowledge Foundation, Germany was recently selected for establishing an EU study centre in India at SP Jain Institute of Management & Research, Mumbai. The inauguration of the Centre by Head of Operations Mr. Hans Schoof, from the Delegation of the European to India took place on the 19th November 2009 and was attended by the Chief Minister (newly appointed EU Commissioner) Mr. Oettinger and Members of Parliament of the State of Baden - Wuerttemberg, where Reutlingen is situated. The presence of such a high ranking delegation was an indicator of the expectation that the graduates of the Centre will become specialists in Indo-European economic cooperation.
Inauguration of "Manipal Centre for European Studies" at Manipal University in Karnataka, India
“The courses offered by the EU Study Centre will improve the employability of its students”- this was the message from Manipal University which inaugurated its EU Study Centre on 17th December 2009. The function was attended by Head of Economics Cooperation Section Mr. Fernando Nino Page from the EU Delegation, Mr. Alexius Collette, CEO, Phillips Innovation Campus, Bangalore; Dr. HS Ballal, Pro Chancellor, Manipal University and Mr. Ulrich Podewils, Team Leader IESCP. The Study Centre has already started enrolling students to the various courses.
Inauguration of the European Study Centre by Symbiosis Centre for International Education
Symbiosis Centre for International Education under the aegis of Symbiosis International University formally inaugurated “European Study Centre” at Pune on 10th January 2010 as part of the Annual Law Day. Dr M. Veerappa Moily , Honourable Minister for Law and Justice, Government of India, was the Chief Guest. Mr. Ulrich Podewils, Team Leader India-EU Study Centres Programme, and Advocate Mr. Ram Jethmalani, Former Minister for Law & Justice, Government of India were the Guests of Honour. The fact that Symbiosis International University is the only institute of its kind in India offering courses on European Law was highlighted during the event.

Inauguration of the Contemporary India Study Centre at Warsaw University, Poland
The Embassy of the Republic of Poland, in collaboration with the Institute of International Relations of the University of Warsaw, UNDP held an inauguration ceremony of the Centre for Contemporary India Research and Studies. The inauguration ceremony was held on January 14, 2010 in New Delhi and was attended by the Ambassador of the Delegation of the European to India, Ms. Daniele Smadja, Ambassadors of the Polish and Spanish Embassies and invited delegates from the partner Universities, Academia and Business Associations. With the opening of the Study Centre, Warsaw University expects to become an important resource for the contemporary India studies within the new EU Member States.
Inauguration of the EU Study Centre at IIT, Madras
IIT Madras inaugurated its newly established "Centre for Comparative EU Studies" on the 20th January 2010 at the IIT Campus. The Inauguration ceremony was attended by Mr. Fernando Nino Page, Head of Economic Cooperation of the Delegation of the European in India; Prof. V. G. Idichandy, Deputy Director, IIT Madras; Mr. Ulrich Podewils, Team Leader IESCP besides others. There was long felt need to “humanize” the Engineering Institutions and it emerged during the inauguration that the creation of the EU Study Centre at the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences Department is a contribution in this direction. University of Delhi inaugurated the “European Studies Programme” on the 28th January 2010 at the University Campus. The Inauguration ceremony was chaired by Professor. Rajni Palriwala, Coordinator for the “European Studies Programme” and attended by Prof. S.K. Tandon, Pro-Vice Chancellor, Prof. Andre Beteille, Prof. J.P.S. Uberoi, and number of luminaries from Indian and European Universities. Ambassador and Head of the Delegation of EU to India, Ms. Daniele Smadja, and her team graced the occasion.
The Academia agreed that in India there is an intellectual need to study European sociology from an Indian perspective and this programme will reinforce efforts in this direction.
